In the 2012 election, Republicans running to defeat President Obama largely passed over La Crosse County before the Wisconsin primary. One GOP candidate did get to town…Senator Rick Santorum, who spoke at the 7 Bridges restaurant in Onalaska, after bowling for TV cameras at La Crosse’s South Lanes. Santorum praised Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker as a “great role model” for conservatives.

Walker was the target of a recall election that year. Five Democrats were running to replace the second-year governor, who had angered many people by passing Act 10, to limit collective bargaining for state employees.  Milwaukee’s Tom Barrett won the primary, setting up a rematch of the 2010 governor’s race.

One week in March, Viterbo hosted two famous guests. One was newspaper columnist Amy Dickinson, who was happy to meet the Franciscan nuns of La Crosse, telling an audience that the sisters are “my kind of peeps, for sure.”

The other was comedian and impressionist Rich Little, who performed a one-man show mainly about Jimmy Stewart.  Little had told Stewart years ago about his idea for the show, and he claimed that the Oscar winner thought the idea would be “boring.”  Rich Little had a big show, six years ago…2012, yesterday in La Crosse.
