The city would need 4000 new houses in a decade…50 years ago
In September of 1967, a citizen planning committee in La Crosse said the community had recovered from high unemployment resulting from plant closings such as Auto-Lite. The committee said adding 100 to 150 new houses a year in La Crosse would not be enough to meet the rising demand. And the need was great for higher-priced houses, which was anything costing more than…$16,000.
La Crosse’s new public library was about to open at 8th and Main Streets. The building cost $921,000, and it’s still the city’s main library.
On TV in September of ’67, viewers were introduced to “The Flying Nun,” played by Sally Field. Mike Connors began his run as the detective “Mannix.” The comedy team of Rowan and Martin hosted a special called “Laugh-In,” which soon became the #1 series on TV. And on this night 50 years ago, a popular cast member of “The Garry Moore Show” got her own weekly series. With a little help from Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Tim Conway, “The Carol Burnett Show” lasted 11 years. We had this time together in 1967, yesterday in La Crosse.
