Two high schools with swimming pools? It was suggested, 33 years ago

In early 1986, the La Crosse School Board was deadlocked on the idea of building a swimming pool and a new gymnasium for Central High School. The school on Losey was 20 years old, compared to the new Logan which opened in 1979 with an indoor pool. The board did agree to add more classrooms to Central, but not a pool.

Assemblyman John Medinger had to miss his first vote in almost 10 years as a lawmaker, because of an accident. Medinger fell in Madison that winter, breaking an ankle and a bone in his leg, and needing to wear a cast.

At the movies, Nick Nolte was “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” Whoopi Goldberg was starring in “The Color Purple,” and the comedy “Wildcats” featured Goldie Hawn as a high school football coach, with Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson among the team players in 1986, yesterday in La Crosse.
