Moving into the dorms became more expensive, 39 years ago

For students at UW-La Crosse booking a dorm room for the fall semester in 1978, the rates were rising.  Reserving a bunk in a double room went up $65 from the previous year…up to $645.  And if you wanted a room all to yourself, it would cost $855.  The La Crosse campus had the cheapest dorm rates in the system.

The UW-L campus hosted a debate for governor in May of ’78 between the two underdog candidates…Democrat David Carley and Republican Lee Sherman Dreyfus.  Acting Governor Martin Schreiber and favored Republican candidate Bob Kasten both turned down the invitation.  All four candidates gathered at Viterbo just before the September primary for two live public TV debates.  Kasten had won his party’s endorsement, and was still complaining before the primary that UW-Stevens Point chancellor Dreyfus wouldn’t drop out.  Dreyfus stayed in the race as a protest of the endorsement system, and ended up winning both the primary and the November election.

And for the first time, the La Crosse Community Theatre chose a play by a local author for a summer production.  UW-L theatre instructor Keith Shaw had written the script for “A Portable Mark Twain”…presented 39 years ago, 1978, yesterday in La Crosse.
