La Crosse beaches closing because of COVID spread

The beaches in La Crosse are off-limits again, just a few weeks into the summer swimming season. 

This week, Pettibone Beach was identified as an apparent hot spot for COVID-19 transmission in the county. 

Starting Wednesday, the Pettibone and Black River beaches will be closed until further notice. 

The city park department says the ‘level of congregation’ at the beaches raises the concern about COVID-19 spread. 

La Crosse already had decided not to open the city swimming pools for the season.  

Pettibone Beach and six other locations, mostly downtown La Crosse bars, were identified by the county as sites where people were exposed to COVID-19 in early June.
