Candidates for House, U.S. Senate, State Supreme Court attend caucus

Republicans in La Crosse County get to see some candidates for high office up close at a Saturday caucus on French Island.

Speakers at the party meeting included State Sen. Leah Vukmir, who’s opposing U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin…Steve Toft, running against La Crosse Congressman Ron Kind…and Judge Michael Screnock, one of three persons running for a State Supreme Court vacancy.

Vukmir will be on the August GOP primary ballot statewide against Kevin Nicholson, while Toft is the only declared Republican candidate for the 3rd District House seat.

Screnock faces off against another circuit judge, Rebecca Dallet, and attorney Tim Burns in a February primary to succeed retiring Justice Michael Gableman.

The three candidates who spoke in La Crosse also were scheduled to appear together later in the day at a Republican caucus in Trempealeau County.
