Man pulled over for throwing
out cigarette, charged with driving drunk

You can be stopped for littering by a Wisconsin state trooper, because of a new state Supreme Court ruling from a La Crosse case.

The justices have ruled that it is reasonable for police to stop a driver because something was thrown out of a car.

The decision goes against arguments made by La Crosse attorney Joe Veenstra, who represents defendant Daniel Iverson.

Two years ago, Iverson was pulled over on Rose Street when his passenger tossed a cigarette butt from the vehicle. The trooper who made the stop then charged Iverson with driving drunk.

The Supreme Court says lower courts should not have dismissed the drunk driving charge, and ordered the case to go back to Judge Ramona Gonzalez.
