As I See It

La Crosse gets the recognition it deserves

A recent survey really puts the city of La Crosse on the map. Money magazine has ranked La Crosse as one of the 50 best cities to live in America. That likely comes as no surprise to those who call La Crosse home, but it got me thinking about just what it is that makes La Crosse such a great place to live. Money magazine pointed to the natural beauty, calling it “picturesque” and cites the healthy job market, arts and the abundant fishing opportunities as reasons for the ranking. The city’s unemployment rate is just 2.2%, and homes are more affordable than in many other parts of the country. Another reason La Crosse is a great place to live is the availability of quality medical care. We are blessed to have two quality institutions just down the street, something we don’t take for granted. We have quality schools, and giving people. Time after time, when people need help, La Crosse residents lend a hand, giving their time and money to make a difference. That makes La Crosse a community. Those who live here already knew that. Now the rest of the world does too.

Affordable La Crosse median home price per Money magazine article $265,000
Assume 10% down; finance $239,000 at current interest rates 7.0% for 30 years.

    Monthly payment to bank $1,550
Property taxes another $300 for a total monthly amount of $1,850.

La Crosse median family income $51,836

Monthly payment as percentage of income 43%. Would a bank even make that loan? Forget the new truck.

Total monthly amount at much lower Trump era interest rates $1,440 or 33% of median family income. Still high but doable.
