TDS store holds ribbon-cutting for Onalaska location, to serve customers with high-speed internet needs

Onalaska welcomed a new retail store for communications needs to the Crossing Meadows Center on Wednesday.

The TDS outlet has opened, just a few months after that company began providing high-speed internet service to the Onalaska area.

Onalaska Mayor Kim Smith took part in Wednesday’s ribbon cutting.

She said growing businesses are needed to help Onalaska’s economy.

“As we’ve seen TDS enter our community from just an idea, to growing to spreading their infrastructure,” Smith said, “and then now opening this retail store where people can have one-on-one contact, which I’m sure they’ll appreciate, we’re glad to see your success in our community.”

TDS is based in Madison. Its local network will include communities such as West Salem, Tomah and Sparta.

“Our investment in this network and this new retail space is a demonstration of our commitment to the community, and we are truly delighted to be here,” Alex Wegner, an associate manager with TDS, who also heads the Onalaska Area Business Association, said.

The fiber network being developed for the Onalaska area is designed to provide connections at 8 gig internet speed, along with phone and TV service.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
