ARPA funds could be allocated to more community groups in La Crosse, under plans reviewed by city council

La Crosse still has millions of dollars in federal funding approved during the COVID pandemic, which hasn’t been allocated yet.

A couple of ideas for using American Rescue Plan Act funds will come before the city council Finance and Personnel committee Thursday.

There’s a proposal to give $75,000 to the city arts board to support artistic programs in La Crosse. Also, the People’s Food Co-op is asking for nearly $30,000 in ARPA money.

The downtown co-op told city leaders that it lost lunchtime customers during the pandemic because businesses changed their work schedules.

The funding request also cites a decline in visits to the co-op, because of safety concerns related to homeless people camping across the street in Cameron Park.

The committee may also vote on a $50 fee to license certain houses in La Crosse for short-term rentals.

An ordinance to regulate rentals for a day or a weekend already came before the council Judiciary and Administration committee Monday, as some citizens have complained about people causing problems at houses that are rented for parties or vacations.

The committee voted to delay action on licensing plans for a month.

“La Crosse has millions of dollars of federal funding…which hasn’t been allocated yet”

Gee, can you tell us how many millions? Inquiring minds would like to know.

How about just throwing the cash out of an airplane and let’s have a free for all instead of the dithering discussion of favors, pay-backs and graft for the Council’s favorite causes?

Oh, the irony. Outfits like the “Peoples’ Coop” support progressive politicians but then want a hand out from government to compensate for loss of business due to high crime and homelessness, signature progressive causes.

How about just give that ARPA money back to the taxpayers.
