Record-setting weekend for La Crosse tourism; what’s happening at Coulee Region Humane Society

A record-setting weekend for tourism in La Crosse, and a giant need for pet adoption, featured Thursday when Explore La Crosse and the Coulee Region Humane Society joined La Crosse Talk PM.

La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.

First, Carey Hagge, Explore La Crosse’s director of tourism and events, came on to talk about the city’s first-ever, not two, but three “big boat” stops at Riverside Park over the weekend. That included the one-of-a-kind LST 325, floating Navy museum — a ship that stormed the beaches on D-Day. It was one of three big boats at Riverside over the weekend, where the levee featured two at the same time for the first time ever. La Crosse also set the LST 325 record for most visitors over a weekend at nearly 18,000.

After that, Coulee Region Humane Society executive director Heather Drievold joined to get the word out on the over 300 animals they’re trying to get adopted, as well as some fundraisers coming up, including Rounds for Rescues.

Drievold said they’re doing a September special, waiving adoption fees for all cats over a year old and cutting those fees in half for kittens.

And next Friday, they’re hoping to fill out foursomes for Rounds for Rescues at Fox Hollow Golf Course, where there’s a chance to win $25,000 and $10,000 hole-in-one contests, as well as a $3,000 putting challenge. And, of course, pet therapy dogs will be on site. Sign up for the event here.
