As I See It

City taking its time painting crosswalks

I have been on this rant before, so forgive me. But I continue to be mystified by how the city of La Crosse maintains, or doesn’t maintain, its pedestrian crosswalks. To begin with, the solid white lines stretching from one corner to the other are often faded to the point of being invisible. Particularly in high-pedestrian areas like downtown. How hard is it to repaint the lines once in a while?  La Crosse simply isn’t very pedestrian friendly. It is hard to fault drivers, particularly those from outside the area, who can’t tell at 30mph there are some faded lines that once denoted a crosswalk. To be fair, the city does occasionally repaint pedestrian crossings. A couple weeks ago, city crews painted brand new, bright, white lines at the intersection of Fifth and King. Well done. Lots of people cross there. I assumed the crews would take care of the other nearby intersections where the lines are similarly invisible. Nope. They did come back two weeks later to paint at Sixth and King, but just one block away, 7th and King has no visible crossings. Wouldn’t it make more sense, while they have the paint and the crew, to do several intersections at once? At this rate they’ll have all the faded lines repainted by around 2030.
