Wisconsin Secretary of State should stay out of election business

It seems everyone wants to have a hand in Wisconsin’s elections. Wisconsin’s elections are overseen by the Wisconsin Elections Commission, an entity created by Republican lawmakers. But some in the Wisconsin Legislature are having buyers’ remorse, and suggest the commission has, at times, overstepped its bounds. Republicans have floated plans to somehow have the state Legislature or the Secretary of State be in charge of certifying elections in Wisconsin. They suggest the Wisconsin Elections Commission is somehow partisan or not enforcing rules fairly. Some spread disinformation about the safety and security of our elections, and search in vain for evidence of fraud. Others may have good intentions, but are also creating confusion. Sarah Godlewski was recently appointed to serve as Wisconsin’s Secretary of State to replace the suddenly retired Doug La Follette. Godlewski’s new job has nothing to do with administering or overseeing elections. In fact, her office has no real duties at all. But, apparently, she thinks her office should be involved in election security, publishing ballots and increasing ballot access. That is a bad idea. Godlewski has no experience with elections. We have a system that works. Let’s let the professionals do their jobs, and Godlewski should find something else to keep her busy.
