As I See It

A day of service

Tuesday was a good day, the kind that doesn’t come around often enough. A little chilly, but the sun was warming. But there was other warmth, too. The smiles and thanks we got when spending just a few hours volunteering. WIZM’s Mike Hayes and I delivered hot and bagged meals through La Crosse’s Mobile Meals program. Actually, all this week, employees of Mid-West Family – La Crosse have spent their late mornings delivering the food to those who rely on these meals for their daily sustenance. We have been doing this twice a year, for several years. It is just one of many volunteering efforts by the good people at Mid-West Family each year. It was nice to take just a small amount of time to remember those whose daily needs requires some outside assistance. Many were longtime WIZM listeners, fondly remembering a WIZM bus trip to Red Wing, Minn., many years ago. Others shared how they listen to this radio station every day, and have for 30 years. Along the way, Mike and I talked, rarely about work, and certainly not about politics. We just talked as friends, had some laughs, each glad to see the other doing well as we drove from house to house delivering meals. It is good to know that programs such as this and many others exist to help those who need it. And it feels good to be just a small part of the process.
