One of the area’s Shopkos could be sold and getting a makeover.

The Onalaska Planning Commission approved Tuesday (agenda) some zoning changes to the East Towne Plaza Shopko, which has been closed since June 6, 2019.

A Florida-based company, intending to buy the property, wants to convert it into five new retail businesses, redeveloping the store with two additions on the east and west sides.

The rezoning by the commission goes from “mixed use” to “regional business” but the full city council will have to approve the move at its September meeting.

The northside La Crosse Shopko in the Bridgeview Plaza closed the same time the Onalaska store did. The southside Shopko closed April 7, 2019.

The applicant for the rezoning is Excel Engineering, CORTA and Paradise Wisconsin Properties, LLC. The Onalaska Shopko is located at 9366 State Road 16.
