Westby, De Soto put on brief lockdown after person spotted carrying rifle, handgun

Both Westby and De Soto schools were put on lockdown Friday, after reports of someone walking around with two guns.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s office reports it received info that a “suspicious person” was open carrying both a rifle and handgun in the Town of Hamburg cemetary.

Because it was so close to the school districts, law enfrocement “implemented security protocols,” the sheriff’s office said.

The person was seen driving away but deputies did itentify the person and determined there was no threat to the community.
