Change in high-rise rules — allowing taller buildings in residential area — approved by 2nd La Crosse committee
An ordinance change aimed at allowing more tall buildings in residential parts of La Crosse now has the blessing of two city committees.
Tuesday, the city council Judiciary and Administration Committee approved an increase in the maximum height of buildings in an R-5 residential district. The city plan commission adopted the same change Monday.
Neighbors of a nursing home on 7th Street have objected to plans for a four-story addition to the Bethany Lutheran home, voicing concerns that other high-rises could follow.
The proposed change would allow buildings as tall as 55 feet to be erected in some residential neighborhoods.
Several people spoke out against the plan Monday but nobody did during Tuesday’s meeting. It will go to the full city council on Dec. 9.
In other council business, a city’s Heritage Preservation commission could be given more power to intervene in plans to demolish historic buildings.
