A 7-year prison sentence awaits a La Crosse man convicted this week of breaking car windows and trying to steal a vehicle at Valley View Mall.

Uneke Scarbrough was found guilty at a jury trial on Tuesday.

The attacks at the mall in early 2020 came a week after Scarbrough was arrested for smashing a window at a downtown La Crosse warming center.

Judge Gloria Doyle also sentenced Scarbrough to prison time on lesser charges, which will be served at the same time as the other sentences.

For the DA’s office, attorney Mitch Philbin described how victims were frightened by Scarbrough’s actions, and reportedly did not want to speak at his sentencing.     Scarbrough also was found guilty of stealing a cellphone loaned to him by a stranger.

He was found competent for trial, but has had mental health issues.    He did not leave his jail cell for sentencing, and did not speak when the judge asked if he had anything to say.
