BARABOO, Wis. — Devil’s Lake State Park is closed, as police search for someone on foot, after a person was found dead on the south shore, there.

Initially, it was a call about an injured person around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, but the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office said it was now investigating as a possible homicide.

“For now, the property is closed and we are asking people to stay away,” Capt. Jeremy Plautz of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

It was not clear if any campgrounds had been evacuated or secured in any way, the Baraboo News Republic reported.

“As we investigate and more information becomes available, we will make a decision about where to go next,” Plautz added.

There was no indication when the park would reopen. The DNR said it is coordinating with Sauk County Sheriff’s Department and Baraboo Police Department in a brief online statement.
