CORRECTION: All should salute members of the Wisconsin Air National Guard

The Scott’s Comment below, states incorrectly that Democrats sat quietly as Republicans applauded troops recently. Video footage shows otherwise. This comment has been addressed in a Scott’s Comment for April 19 (read here).

There are times when it is OK to take sides. In an argument. In a bet. At a sporting event. Or at a wedding. Bride or groom? But we should not be taking sides when it comes to honoring members of our military. That is what happened on the floor of the Wisconsin Legislature this week. Members of the Wisconsin Air National Guard were invited to the State Assembly Chamber to be recognized for their service along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Wisconsin troops had been deployed there by former Gov. Scott Walker, at the behest of President Donald Trump. They were sent there to secure the border, but when Gov. Tony Evers was elected, he ordered them to return home. Republicans invited the military members to a ceremony in their honor. They applauded when the Guard members were formally recognized. But Democrats sat silently and did not applaud. That is shameful. These Guard members were simply doing their job, as they were ordered to do. They were carrying out their mission. They should not be slighted for their service. Just because the democrats didn’t think our Guard troops had any business on the Mexico border, that doesn’t diminish the work they did. They should be honored for their service, not slighted, no matter one’s political affiliation.

I don’t often agree with you, but this time you hit a home run. As a retired member of the U S Air Force I would like to think that the sacrifice made by military members is appreciated (especially if the ultimate sacrifice is called for) by all members of society to include the legislature. If there is no appreciation, or respect then what is it for?

Absolutely disgusting behavior–reminds me of the return of the Viet Nam veterans–shameful.
