ONALASKA, Wis. — For one half, it looked as though Onalaska and Central high school’s boys basketball team would split their regular-season matchup.

The Hilltoppers, ranked fifth in Division 2 by the AP, held No. 2-ranked Central scoreless for the final six minutes of the first half and went into the break with a five-point lead.

The second half was a different story. After shooting 8 of 30 before the break, the Red Raiders went 12 of 28 from the field and 16 of 16 from the line after, and pulled out a 62-52 win at Onalaska’s Charles Deeth Fieldhouse.

Junior Johnny Davis had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Central (16-2, 10-0), which is up a game and a half on Onalaska for the MVC crown.

For the Hilltoppers (16-4, 9-2) to share the MVC title now, they’ll need to win their final game and hope Central loses its last two.

Carson Arenz scored 16 to lead Onalaska, which was down by as many as 12 in the second half. The closest it got was 52-48 with 3:23 remaining. Central, however, made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the comeback.
