Governor says 200,000 signed up for rebate in just 3 days

The children’s section at Farm and Fleet near Valley View Mall attracted a crowd on Thursday, when Governor Scott Walker showed up during a statewide tour to publicize his child tax rebate program.

It was the third time the governor has come to the La Crosse area specifically to talk up the $100-per-child tax break.

Walker says as many as 1.2 million children in Wisconsin could be eligible for the rebate, which is intended to help families pay for kids’ clothes or school supplies.

Through Thursday afternoon, the program had drawn 200,000 applications since the start of the sign-up period on May 15th.

Walker, who’s running for a third term, also told local reporters that La Crosse and Madison continue to lead the state in low unemployment levels.

Wisconsin’s jobless rate is now at a record low 2.8%.
