Onalaska’s school board gets building security update

The Onalaska School District has $123,000 projected in security upgrades for its buildings.

Much of that is pertaining to the front entrance.

Business and finance director Kent Ellickson says they hope to increase the strength of glass at five buildings while not breaking the bank.

“Bulletproof glass, we learned, cost about $100 per square foot,” Ellickson said. “Laminated glass, it does slow down, so it would take repeated impacts to penetrate, we are understanding.”

The laminant glass would be installed on the doors.

Ellickson says he hopes the new grant program implemented by the state justice department for school safety will help pay for some of those costs.
