Tech will rid city of gate system, which was installed 3 years ago for $450,000.

Around three years ago, the city of La Crosse installed a gated parking system in the downtown ramps.

Aug. 1, that $450,000 system was to be replaced with a new automated way to charge for parking.

And, like the delays the gated system had before it was up and running, the same is happening with the new equipment.

“There’s still a couple of software issues,” city parking coordinator Jim Flottmeyer said. “They’re not communicating right, yet. So, we’re still working on that.”

The new goal is to have one system operational by mid-August, while the other ones go on the week before Labor Day, Flottmeyer added.

For the time being, the gated system will remain but once the new tech is operational, the gates will be taken down.

Instead, police will have the responsibility of checking license plates to see how long a car has been parked in a ramp.
