City ran out of beer last year, two weeks before Oktoberfest.

On a horse drawn carriage, the first case of Oktoberfest Old Style beer was delivered to the La Crosse mayor’s office this morning.

It’s the second consecutive year La Crosse has made the beer.

City Brewing Company Brewmaster Randy Hughes said slight changed to the recipe were made from last year but the core taste remains.

The only hiccup from last year came from too many people drinking the beer.

“And I actually tried to warn them,” Hughes said, before the fest ran out of the Oktoberfest beer last year. “I said ‘You don’t realize how big a deal this will be, at least locally.’ So, they thought they were ready.

“Draft beer sold out about two weeks before Oktoberfest.”

Hughes is expecting another big year again and have produced 10-15 percent more beer this time around.

He expects cans to hit shelves before the end of the month, with draft beer to follow shortly thereafter.

No word on how La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat is doing, since the case was delivered. As of 1:30 p.m., nobody was answering the phones at his office.
