Taxes and speed limit could drop for some in city after vote tonight

A couple of issues with lasting implications will get final decisions tonight by La Crosse’s city council.

One will have an impact on property taxes, and the other on getting from here to there.

The council will vote on lowering the speed limit on Losey Blvd. – a move that’s been controversial since it was introduced a month ago.

Critics say dropping the speed on Losey from 30 to 25 could be bad for business. The council committee vote was close, but Mayor Tim Kabat was in the WIZM studio Monday and said it is likely to be changed.

Another vote will retire two Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) districts. Those are special loans-for-development arrangements that have matured ahead of time, meaning property taxpayers could see tax small breaks as soon as next year.
