Property taxes could account for 20% of 2017 funding

Today, the La Crosse County board will vote on a $161 million budget for 2017.

It’s lower than recent budgets, according to county administrator Steve O’Malley, because it doesn’t include big construction items like the new administrative center.

Monday nights hearing on the matter only attracted a handful of speakers, all showing appreciation for the county’s help in funding projets to improve the region.

The tax levy would be about $33 million under the plan being placed before the board.

O’Malley says a typical county taxpayer might see an increase of 1.5 percent for 2017.

Property taxes could account for about 20 percent of county funding for next year, under the budget plan likely to be passed today by the county board.
