Ron Johnson fighting for his job, fighting Trump on some issues

Appears to be in dead heat with Feingold

In the last few weeks of this extraordinary election season, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson is fighting for his job.The republican appears to be in a statistical dead heat in the race with Russ Feingold, and Johnson is spending a lot of time answering for his party’s nominee for president, Donald Trump.

Johnson said on WIZM late last week he’s disappointed that Trump is his party’s nominee for president but he won’t turn away from Trump on all issues. Just some.

 

“On those big issues, including appointing judges on the Supreme Court, I agree with our nominee, so I’ll choose to support those areas of agreement and disagree with him where I disagree with him.”

Johnson calls the presidential contest a binary one. Two realistic choices. And he’s certainly not voting for Hillary Clinton.

Johnson’s association with Trump may not keep him from retaining his senate seat. The Marquette University Law School poll showed Johnson essentially tied with democrat Feingold in that race.

“The majority of Americans are kind of where I am, just disappointed,” Johnson said on WIZM late last week. “Out of 320 million Americans, this is our choice? 

“I would love to be voting for someone like a Ronald Reagan. On the Democrats side, they probably be wishing they were voting for someone like Harry Truman but that’s not the choice.”

Johnson feels if he continues to address issues of economic and national security those issues will resonate with voters despite the current apparent unpopularity of Trump in the state.  

 

“It’s sad we’re at this position but, basically, I’m handling it by running for my re-election, addressing the issues that affect Wisconsinites,” he said.
