Kane St. community garden introducing bio-diversity demonstration Thursday

New plants to attract more pollinators

La Crosse’s north side community garden is introducing a new feature Thursday.

That’s when the dedication of the Bio-diversity Demonstration Garden on the Kane St. will take place

That land will feature shrubs and other plants you might not find in a typical backyard garden, but Joyce Cielecki from the La Crosse County’s health dept. says those plants will help others grow and attract pollinators.

“To attract more beneficial insects, such as pollinators, to the King St. community garden,” she said. “To have more pollinators helps produce more food.

“Tiny bees, there’s big bees, there’s bumble bees, there’s butterflies, there’s several different flies species. They’re all totally oblivious to us. They’re working their way going for the pollen and the nectar and they’ll go on and help pollinate the garden, as well.”

Cielecki says the bio-diversity display also might give landscapers ideas for different plants to grow at their homes. The special garden was installed this summer by the WisCorps Mayor’s Crew.
