WHOOPS: City forgets to tweak rule, now illegal to drink within 1,000 feet of any park

Police have yet to ticket under new ordinance

There are places you can drink in La Crosse, just not as many as there used to be thanks to a recent vote by the city council.  

A new rule on the books was meant to clarify where you could drink in relation to parks in the city.

Basically, the idea was to keep people from drinking near kids, on playground equipment or swimming – within 1,000 from a playground or swimming area within that area.

Instead, the rule that was approved last month, bans drinking or even possessing alcohol within a 1,000 feet of any park property. 

With about four dozen parks in the city, that rule means that whole neighborhoods should technically be booze free. 

Police say they have yet to ticket under the new ordinance. The city council is expected to tweak the rule and pass the new version next month.
