OAKLAND, Calif. — During a speech by Bernie Sanders, a group of animal rights activists jumped barricades and tried to rush the podium Monday.

Sanders’ security stopped the protesters before they could reach the Democratic presidential hopeful.

Two bodyguards immediately surrounded Sanders, while nearby security personnel quickly handcuffed the protesters and escorted them out of the rally, even carrying one of them by the arms and legs.

The crowd of between 20,000-30,000 – though some reports had it up to as many as 60,000 – at the Frank Ogawa Plaza booed until they were escorted out, then began cheering, “Bernie. Bernie.”

The 74-year-old Sanders then told the crowd, “We don’t get intimidated easily.”

The confusing part of the protest is that Sanders is a strong supporter of animal rights and family farms over factory farms. He’s received a 100-percent rating from the Humane Society Legislative Fund.

Earlier in the day, Sanders joined actor Danny Glover and San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim for a conversation at the historic Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland.
