Group trying to bring back Myrick Park Zoo

One fundraiser down, countless more to go.

The Myrick Park community group is coming off its first fundraiser this weekend. Sadly, it won’t come close to putting together the amount of money the group will need to restore the Myrick Park Zoo to its glory days.            

Organizer Shannon Thompson says their eventual goal is to rebuild the old Myrick Park Zoo just the way it was before it closed – an effort that will cost millions of dollars to achieve. 

Thompson fully accepts the challenge.

“I do know that it’s going to be expensive,” Thompson said. “It’s going to take community involvement. It’s going to take city involvement.”

But Thompson feels the community is completely behind the effort to recreate the zoo, which was removed nearly a decade ago to make way for what become the failed educational Eco-Park. 

“You know what?” Thompson asked. “Everybody wants it and we’re going for it.

“I don’t think I’ve talked to anybody in the last two months that was against the zoo.”

The group has slowly been building momentum and developing and organization since last year.
