New rules means city could be coming after you

Nuisance properties won’t be tolerated

La Crosse city hall could be coming after you.

The city is working on tightening up nuisance rules and enforcement with an eye toward trying to keep things clean and tidy.

Among the things city hall can get you for even now:

• Weeds/grass too high
• Broken windows
• Garbage cans in the wrong place
• Too many pets
• Water draining from roof to street
• Illegal wading pool

One of the changes getting considered by the council next month is lowering the height of allowable weeds from 10 to 8 inches. 

Mayor Tim Kabat says his goal is to do more to tackle nuisance properties.

“It’s kind of the same chronic properties that don’t ever seem to change or it just takes so long to see the positive change,” Kabat said. “I’ve been happy with the progress that we’ve made, but we still have room to go.”

Kabat’s plans also involve decreasing the number of times police are called to a property before it’s considered a nuisance. 

“Just greater tools to be able to get after these ones that seem to plague neighborhoods and have those negative impacts,” Kabat said.
