A former National Guard armory in La Crosse may be on its way to national historic status.

The city’s heritage preservation board will talk tonight about nominating the South Avenue building to the Register of Historic Places.

The National Guard stopped using the armory in 1960, before it became a Bakalars sausage factory, which closed after the 2011 tornado in south La Crosse.

The commission also could vote tonight to make the duck house from the former Myrick Zoo a local landmark.  The house is all that remains of the duck pond which was removed when the zoo was converted into an Eco-Park.
