Sheriff unsure about recent jail inspection

Parts of jail fine last year,
out of compliance now

The La Crosse County sheriff is a little frustrated after the most recent review of the county jail by a state inspector.

Tuesday, Sheriff Steve Helgeson told the county judiciary committee that the inspector felt the jail was out of compliance in areas that seemed perfectly fine the previous year.

Helgeson thinks that the inspector, who used to be a prison warden, might be trying to hold a county jail to state facility standards.

The inspector also recommended than an unused section of the jail be opened up, in case the prisoner population keeps rising.
