Third weekend of gunfire, seventh shooting, in less than a month

Another shooting in La Crosse, the third weekend in just under a month, and the seventh shooting in that time frame.

The first six shootings occurred on the southside. Today, the gunfire took place on the northside of town.

Around 2 p.m. Sunday, shots were fired in the 1600 block of Avon St., La Crosse Captain Ron Lawrence said. Police found evidence consistent with a shots-fired incident.

Police did not immediately see any suspects, victims or possible vehicles related to the shooting. 

Shortly after 4 p.m., the emergency response team entered a home on Avon St., but no suspects or victims were found.

Police have no description of suspects or vehicles, and no victims tied into the shooting at this time.

This is the third weekend of shootings in La Crosse in less than a month. The first occurred Aug. 14. The second a week later that led to the murder of 17-year-old Central High School student, George Miller. And, now, today’s incident. 

On the weekend of Aug. 14, a total of five shootings took place between Friday and Sunday. First, a drive-by near 5th and Jackson streets. While police were on the scene there, another shooting occurred on Mississippi St. that evening on Aug. 14.

A third shooting took place the afternoon of Aug. 15 on 3rd St., where a 40-year-old was shot in the foot, standing outside his home. A day later, shots were fired at both the 900 block of 5th St. and the 900 block of S. 4th St., where a 19-year-old was injured.

A week later, on Aug. 21, 18-year-old Deshawn Randall was arrested for the murder of Miller, who was wounded and eventually killed 11 times by nine different gunshots from a .380 caliber pistol, police later found. That story can be read here.
