La Crosse County Admin. wrapped up 18th Habitat 500

He’s raised over $330,000 biking for the Habitat for Humanity.

Steve O’Malley has been participating in the Habitat 500 Bike Ride for 18 years. That’s 9,000 miles on the bike. This season, the La Crosse County Administrator’s raised $7,700 on the 500-mile ride, donating to the Habitat La Crosse.

There were 135 riders at this year’s Habitat 500, in its 24th year, starting back in 1993. The 500-mile course takes about seven days – or 71 miles a day – mostly through Minnesota. Riders raise funds and designate the Habitat for Humanity affiliates they wish to support (both locally and around the world).

Each rider for this particular event is required to raise a minimum of $1,000, but the average amount raised is over $2,710 per rider.

O’Malley told WIZM it feels great raising money for a great cause doing what he loves. He doesn’t plan on stopping, either. He’ll be back for year 19 next July. For more information on the cause check out Habitat500.org.
