Police Attacker Needs Another Mental Exam Before Release Hearing

Joseph Smith will get yet another exam before his next competency hearing in La Crosse County Court…

Judge Dale Pasell is asking for two doctors to examine Smith, to see if he’s competent to ask for a release from the Mendota institute. The next hearing is set for March 19th. Smith was found not guilty due to mental illness, after stabbing and wounding a La Crosse policeman during a traffic stop eight years ago. He spent four years at Mendota before being released briefly, but was re-committed when his mental condition became worse.

 

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
