FILE - The vacant Macy's store at Valley View may be replaced by restaurants and possibly a car wash.

A request to demolish the former Macy’s store at Valley View Mall was approved by La Crosse’s city council on Thursday.

Council members passed a resolution for a conditional use permit to let a developer replace the empty anchor store at the mall with three “quick-serve” restaurants, a car wash and about 100 more parking spaces.

A Raising Cane’s franchise, a Panda Express and a coffee shop are expected to be the restaurants.

The storefront was occupied by Dayton’s department store when the mall opened in 1980. Later it became a Marshall Field, Macy’s, and finally a Herbergers for a short time.

Macy’s left Valley View Mall in 2017.
