During “state of city” address, La Crosse Mayor Reynolds makes presentation for city administrator

Twelve years after La Crosse residents voted against hiring a full-time city administrator, to work with an elected mayor, the concept is being proposed again.

La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds briefly presented the administrator idea last night, during a “state of the city” address to the La Crosse city council.

Reynolds said a handful of Wisconsin cities, including La Crosse, still do not have an unelected administrator to manage city business.

Reynolds also talked about the idea back in September on La Crosse Talk PM.

A 2012 city referendum to establish a full-time administrator was defeated by about 2000 votes. Some opponents perceived the plan as a criticism of Matt Harter, the city’s young mayor at the time.

Onalaska is among area cities to have both an administrator and an elected mayor. La Crosse County has an administrator, as well.

Reynolds is pushing for something not needed.
1: There are already too many committees in city government.

2: There are too many committees who review requests by citizens and businesses.

3: this whole area is much too parochial.

4: You bring someone who has experiences in various geographic areas and has fresh ideas. The individual would get frustrated and just but heads.

5: Hire a local and you are just wasting money.
