As I See It

Sports doesn’t need more drama, Ms. Swift

What would sports be without all the hype? So much buildup, so much drama, yet the hype is often more dramatic than the actual games. We heard how the Brewers were poised for a deep run in the postseason, only to see them swept in two games. The Jets were the team to beat this year, right? We were told they were only one player away from the Super Bowl, one quarterback named Aaron Rodgers. The media ran with the story, and the smart money was on the Jets. We saw Rodgers immersing himself in New York, as if inevitably headed for a Lombardi trophy.  As it turns out, despite all that hype, Aaron played five snaps before going down with injury and could be done for the season. Meanwhile the Jets are toiling in obscurity. Similarly, the hype train was rolling at my alma mater, the University of Iowa, where the football team with one of the worst offenses in the country last year picked up a transfer quarterback and tight end. They would have to be better, the experts told us. Yet somehow the Hawkeye offense is even worse this year. Our new quarterback and tight end? Both injured, and out of for the season. So much for the expert predictions. Maybe we should just ignore all the hype in sports. Unless, of course, Taylor Swift decides to show up at the game.
