La Crosse plans to remove traffic signals at well known intersections

Some well known intersections in La Crosse may not have traffic signals much longer.

The city council Judiciary and Administration Committee voted Tuesday to remove signals from intersections including 7th and Cass, and West Avenue and South Avenue, along with the spots where East Avenue and Ward Avenue intersect with South Avenue. In many of those locations, roundabouts have been installed.

City engineer Matt Gallager says traffic lights also will be removed at 16th and Main, near UWL, because 16th Street doesn’t pass all the way through the campus as it did decades ago. Gallager says the switch to stop signs reflects how traffic has changed in those areas.

“If it’s the case that we deem it really isn’t necessary any more, maybe there’s been development, or change in traffic patterns…then what we can do is follow the recommendations of the federal guidelines to conduct the 90-day study” and post stop signs, Gallager told the committee.

The full city council will be asked to approve the removal of signals at those intersections during its August meeting next week.

if you must remive it, then move it to Losey and Weston st. There’s a real need there.

“traffic lights also will be removed at 16th and Main, near UWL, because 16th Street doesn’t pass all the way through the campus as it did decades ago.” As long as we are talking history here … those lights that are going to be removed were never even there many decades ago as in the 50s and the early 60s.

7th and Cass already has a traffic circle. Was it a different intersection that was voted on recently?

I’m pretty sure 7th & Cass already has a traffic circle. Am I wrong?
