Murder charges have been dismissed against two men accused of killing Ernest Knox in north La Crosse last January.

Prosecutor Nick Passe says the testimony of a key eyewitness has changed, and does not support the physical evidence from the murder scene on Rose Street. As a result, the case against Karvel Freeman and Nelson Brown has been dropped, and the investigation continues.

Freeman

Knox was shot to death on January 8th of 2022, while attending a party at an apartment. Investigators say more than 40 shots were fired.

Brown

Freeman was arrested a few weeks later in Tennessee, and was scheduled to go on trial next month for the shooting. Brown was captured in Arizona at Thanksgiving, and is set to be released from the La Crosse County jail.

Sadly, It has always been said that if you want to get away with murder La Crosse is the place to be. I think that someone got to this witness. The fact that they changed their story doesn’t negate their original story it just makes it harder to get a conviction. In another case multiple witnesses said it was self defense and yet they are still trying that case for murder. They will push for a plea deal that will probably put an innocent man in prison for a few years rather than chance a guilty verdict that would put him in prison for life. So why is this case different?
