Purchase of La Crosse credit union office for housing comes up for city review this week

La Crosse city committees will get a chance this week to study the plan to develop housing in a north-side office building.

The proposed purchase of the Marine Credit Union building on Monitor Street will be reviewed at 4 p.m. Monday by the City Plan Commission (agenda). The plan will come up for another public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday before the council’s Judiciary and Administration Committee (agenda).

Affordable housing reportedly is the goal, with city officials wanting to convert the indoor space at the credit union into apartments — possibly creating 30 new units. Mayor Mitch Reynolds, however, did mention early last week the building could be used for the homeless.

The Marine office had been posted for sale before the housing proposal was listed on city meeting agendas.
