A cash bond of $50,000 has been set for the 18-year-old suspect in the shooting death of a 15-year-old, which happened two weeks ago on La Crosse’s south side.

Sage Hicke of Ontario made his first court appearance Monday in La Crosse, after turning himself in to city police last Friday.

Hicke is charged with first-degree murder in the May 22 death of Storm Vondrashek, which happened outside an apartment building on 7th Street.

Hicke is also accused of disorderly conduct and the use of a dangerous weapon, in connection with the wounding another boy, who is 17 years old.

Hicke allegedly shot the two victims during a dispute between two groups. His attorney says the victims pointed a gun at Hicke and he fired back in self-defense.

Prosecutor Jessica Skemp says the fact that Hicke turned himself in to police is a factor in his favor.

Skemp added, however, that “he was hiding out until he did turn himself in to the police, and we have information that it was out of state, I believe it was Kentucky.”

Judge Todd Bjerke set another hearing for June 14. The judge said Hicke cannot have contact with the families of the shooting victims and is not allowed to have weapons.
