Defending Wisconsin spelling champ gets one more shot at nationals
A Madison area student has one more chance to win the National Spelling Bee.
Maya Jadhav of Fitchburg won the Wisconsin state spelling bee in Madison on Saturday for the fourth consecutive year.
Jadhav’s winning word was “obrotund,” which means something nearly the shape of a sphere.
It’s her fifth year qualifying for nationals — her last year of eligibility for the contest, because she’s in eighth grade.
Students from La Crosse Aquinas, Onalaska, Holmen, and Melrose-Mindoro represented the CESA-4 district of western Wisconsin at the state finals.
Jadhav finished at the top of a field of 54 spellers from around the Badger State, with a sixth-grade speller from Madison placing second.
