La Crosse goal for start of school: kids back in classrooms

Two weeks left for summer vacation for most La Crosse school students.  The fall semester begins on September 1st, and for the first time in two years, superintendent Aaron Engel hopes to have all the students and teachers in the classroom on the first day.

“We absolutely do not want to go back to virtual learning,” Engel tells the La Crosse school board. “While that was useful at the time, and our teachers did an amazing job, we know that most of our students learn best in person.”

Engel says that all students 12 or older will be encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID, if they haven’t been already.

In mid-August of last year, area schools were preparing to start fall classes with kids learning at home.

The two La Crosse schools which have year-round class, Hamilton and Northside, have already been in session for a month.

Engel says about half of the La Crosse students age 12 and over appear to be vaccinated for now.
