The plans for a new La Crosse fire station at UWL move a step ahead at City Hall.
The board of public works has approved a request by the university to vacate one block of 14th Street, on the far west edge of the campus.

The university’s director of planning, Scott Schumacher, says the state doesn’t have any project in mind for that block.

The La Crosse fire department wants to put a new firehouse near La Crosse Street, close to Coate Hall and the Whitney Center.

Just last month, the city council voted to start work on the campus-area fire station, making that location the top priority over a new station on Gillette Street.
