Winter Rec-Fest in La Crosse takes a break for 2nd straight year

For the second year in a row, La Crosse isn’t going to have a Winter Rec-Fest.

Last winter, the city decided to take a year off to consider changes in the celebration, and then have a re-organized event in early 2021.

That was before anybody saw COVID-19 coming.

Park department event coordinator Abby Heilman says the city staff wasn’t really expecting the event to happen this year anyway, after Riverfest and Oktoberfest were called off.

Heilman says there was no specific decision to cancel this year’s Rec-Fest, but then “when things kinda started gettin’ surging here, it was just best to not consider hosting that big of an event.”

Heilman still expects to have sled nights this winter at Forest Hills, and popular ice rinks will be open eventually.

They still haven’t figured out a way to do the euchre and sheepshead card tournaments with social distancing.
