Gundersen Hotel helps county house some homeless people with COVID
For a few weeks this fall, the EconoLodge in north La Crosse took in homeless people through a government grant program.
Now, a second La Crosse hotel is offering shelter specifically to persons who are homeless and infected with COVID, or who have tested for the virus.
Three such persons have been housed at the Gundersen Hotel on South Avenue during the past two weeks, according to La Crosse County human services official Audra Martine.
She tells a county board committee that the three stayed at the hotel either until they recovered from the virus, or left on their own.
County supervisor Kim Cable says the county still has unused shelter space, which she hopes can be occupied by people now on the street.
The county has worked with the Coulee Region Collaborative to End Homelessness on the hotel shelter programs.
